The John Wareing Monument on 17th Street. The Boardwalk is a symbol of strength, courage and the determination of a longtime Virginia Beach resident who dedicated his life to fitness and the community. Wareing will always be remembered as a person with superhuman strength who helped get thousands of Virginia Beach residents into shape by opening up a gym in his own name. Called Wareing's Gym, Wareing wanted his gym to be a "Gym for Every Body." As part of the gym's huge success, Wareing "set the tone by focusing on personal attention and instruction, results instead of frills and keeping it fun" (www.wareingsgym.com). The monument was dedicated in his name in June 2004.
